History

Since its first edition in 1963, the Festa do Marisco has grown remarkably, from a modest local celebration into a festival with an international reputation. Created to showcase the seafood of the ría among local people, it has become a multi-day event celebrating the variety and quality of the seafood of the Rías Baixas. This growth reflects the increasing recognition of Galicia’s cultural and food heritage and has made O Grove a must-visit destination for food lovers.

The festival is not only a celebration of food: it also helps to preserve the area’s fishing and shellfishing traditions. At the stalls and in the kitchens, traditional techniques handed down from generation to generation are still used, and the programme is completed with music, performances and activities for all ages.

The Festa do Marisco is an economic driver for O Grove and gives a significant boost to the local economy every autumn. Local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to small shops and craftspeople, see their takings rise during the festival. The event also creates seasonal jobs and business opportunities for local people, strengthening the economic and social fabric of the community.

With visitors coming from Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom and many other places, the Festa do Marisco has established itself as an event of international standing. This recognition raises O Grove’s profile, highlights the exceptional quality of Galician seafood and promotes Galicia as a first-class food destination.
